The Mini-Mums Trend: A New Twist on a Texas Tradition

Homecoming mums are a Texas tradition that dates back almost 100 years, with the first documented mum photographed at Baylor University in 1936. This tradition has evolved over the years, becoming bigger and more elaborate with each passing year.

One Aledo mom, Kristian Recio, has taken this tradition to a whole new level by tying it to a new trend: Stanley tumblers. Recio, who has been crafting mums since she was in ninth grade, decided to create mini mums for her six-year-old this year, starting a new trend that has taken off in San Antonio and beyond.

“I made one for my six-year-old, a garter to wear with his friend — a mini one,” Recio explained. “That’s how I went smaller and smaller to the Stanley.” People have gone crazy for these mini mums, with requests pouring in from all over Texas.

“It’s just a Texas thing and I think it’s just a tradition. I’m not even sure how it came to be, but it is so important,” Recio said. The themes for these mini mums are endless, ranging from school spirit to personal causes like breast cancer and autism awareness.

Recio is now making dozens of mini mums per day, ensuring that every order is fulfilled in time for the homecoming Friday night lights. “I don’t even know how it blew up like this, but it has been really cool to see,” Recio laughed.
