Welcome to our blog! Today, we’re discussing the recent announcement by Governor Greg Abbott regarding the removal of over 1 million people from the state’s voter rolls. Out of this number, more than 463,000 individuals were from the state’s suspense list.
The suspense list is used to identify voters who may have moved since they registered to vote. According to Katie Campbell Shumway, Executive Director of the League of Women Voters-Houston, registered voters are mailed renewal certificates every two years. If these certificates are not returned, the voter’s name is added to the suspense list.
If a voter remains on the suspense list for two federal election cycles, they may be removed from the state’s voter rolls. Campbell Shumway advises individuals to check their voting status, especially if they have not voted recently.
Despite being on the suspense list, voters may still have the opportunity to cast their ballots, provided they are in the same precinct as their original registration and can provide documentation to support this. To check your voter registration status, you can visit the Vote Texas website.
