Michelle Williams Fights for Her Job and Classroom

Michelle Williams, a dedicated educator with a passion for teaching, finds herself in a challenging position where her job is intact, but her presence in the classroom remains uncertain.

The Houston Independent School District attempted to terminate Williams, a long-time teacher and former president of the Houston Education Association, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Despite a hearing in June ruling in her favor, Williams is still stuck at home, unsure of her future.

“It’s just one day at a time,” Williams shared in an interview with KHOU 11 reporter Maria Aguilera. “I’m still on administrative leave.”

The district took Williams out of her third-grade classroom in March on allegations of “inappropriate conduct” related to her use of social media during school hours. However, Williams clarified that she scheduled posts in advance from a studio at her house. After a virtual hearing in June, the independent hearing examiner ruled in her favor and recommended her return to the classroom.

“The district did not meet its burden, and the evidence presented was incomplete and contradictory,” said Williams’ attorney, Giana Ortiz.

Despite the victory, Williams continues to face uncertainties about her role within HISD. She remains vocal about her concerns and recently filed a formal complaint against the district leadership with the Texas Education Agency.

“I just wanted to clear my name because they were making false accusations against me,” Williams emphasized. “I won’t stop fighting for myself and other teachers.”

As Williams awaits further instructions from HISD, she remains determined to reclaim her classroom and continue making a difference in the lives of her students.
