LOS ANGELES – Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison both passed away on the same day, the singer revealed on Monday.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winning artist shared in a statement.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” the statement continued. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

The Times Union reported on Monday that Alison, who was mostly estranged from Carey, passed away at the age of 63 due to complications with her organ function, while in hospice care.

People Magazine was the first to report on the deaths of Patricia and Alison, along with Carey’s official statement.

Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer, was a significant inspiration for Carey from a young age.

“I would sing little tunes around the house, to my mother’s delight. And she always encouraged me,” Carey wrote in her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” published in 2020.

Carey detailed her complex relationship with her mother and sister in her book, revealing instances of clashes with her mother and feeling unsafe due to her sister’s actions in her childhood.

Despite the challenges, Carey maintained contact with her mother and honored their bond by recording a duet together for her Christmas album in 2010.
