The Rise of Cy Falls Eagles: A Look Ahead to the 2024 Football Season
Last season, the Cy Falls Eagles showcased their strength and determination by finishing second in the highly competitive 6A Region II District 16 with an impressive 6-1 record. However, their playoff journey was cut short in the first round with a tough 32 – 6 loss to the Tomball Cougars. With a few key changes and new talents emerging, Cy Falls is gearing up for a deeper run in 2024.
“We’ve probably changed more on the offensive side than the defensive side of the ball coming into the fall 2024 season,” said head football coach Chris Brister. “Defensively we’re not changing anything as far as a scheme standpoint. We’ve got a lot of different faces doing it. However, there will be an experience factor that we have to work through.”
Last season’s quarterback, Kye Callicoattee, is now playing at Sul Ross State University, leaving big shoes to fill at the quarterback position. Filling those shoes will be Pharoah Kennedy. Known for his versatility, Kennedy has excelled both as a quarterback and wide receiver. This year, he will be at the helm of the offense. The hope is that Kennedy’s ability to display skills at WR – exceptional route-running and reliable hands – will translate to mastering the skills at the quarterback position. With his athletic prowess, Kennedy is expected to lead the team with confidence and skill.
Stepping up as a senior, Chase Ferrell will continue to be a key target for the Cy Falls offense even with a new QB leading the team. Committed to the Air Force Academy, Ferrell has proven his worth over the past two years. Last season, he amassed 981 all-purpose yards, 858 receiving yards with 43 receptions, 17 carries averaging 20.0 yards per carry, and scored eight touchdowns. His efforts earned him a spot on the 1st Team All-District 16-6A and Academic All-District honors.
On the defensive side, Cy Falls boasts some formidable talent. Kaleb Burns, a Baylor University commit, is a dominant force at linebacker. At 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, Burns was named the Defensive MVP of District 16-6A last season. He led the team with 6.6 tackles per game, totaling 55 solo tackles, 18 assisted tackles, three quarterback hurries, and six sacks. His ability to play all three downs makes him a crucial part of the defense.
Ashton Wilson, a three-year varsity starter, brings a wealth of experience and physicality to the safety position. Last season, he was a key player with 45 tackles, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, seven tackles for loss, and six passes broken up, earning him All-District honors.
With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talents, Cy Falls is poised to make significant strides this season. The team’s dedication, coupled with the strategic adjustments on both offense and defense, indicates a promising journey ahead. As the 2024 season approaches, the Eagles are ready to soar higher and aim for a deeper playoff run, building on the foundation laid by their predecessors.
