Now, imagine a 30-year-old Chevy P-30 delivery van that had seen better days, sitting forgotten at the University Housing and Dining Department. It was a challenge waiting to be conquered by these ambitious students. With over 30 students dedicating countless hours to the project, they transformed the van into a cutting-edge electric vehicle.
Andrew Linhart, a member of the Class of 2024, shared, “It had become completely nonfunctional. We gutted the whole system and converted it into an electric vehicle. The original vehicle didn’t even have A.C.” That’s where the magic began.
Over the span of two semesters, the students undertook an impressive restoration and conversion process as part of their Capstone Design Project. Freshmen in the group even installed a brand-new dashboard with high-tech displays, providing real-time information like speed and battery charge.
Team captain Austin Greer highlighted the complexity of the project, noting the fusion of GM truck components, an Omni motor, and Tesla batteries. To make these parts work seamlessly together, the students ingeniously mimicked different electrical signatures.
The challenges didn’t stop there. The students rigorously tested the van, from freeway drives to navigating obstacle courses in parking lots. Upholding legal regulations for road readiness was also key, with one student specializing in researching this aspect, laying the groundwork for a future attorney.
With a total cost of $53,000 covered by a university grant, the students emerged from this project with invaluable experience. Housing and Dining now boasts a custom e-van in their fleet, ready to hit the streets of Rice University.
