Houston Schools Struggle with AC Repairs Amid Sweltering Heat
As temperatures soared over 100 degrees in the Houston area, students and parents faced a sweltering situation as several schools experienced AC repairs. The closure of TH Rogers School due to AC issues was just the tip of the iceberg, with reports flooding in from other schools as well.
Students at Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School described the discomfort of dealing with faulty AC systems. “The AC was out in some of our classes. For instance, today in broadcast journalism,” student Hooper Scholtz shared. The oppressive heat made focusing on their studies challenging, with student Magnolia Scholtz likening the atmosphere to an oven.
Parents at various schools reached out to KHOU 11 News, expressing their frustrations with the lack of communication regarding the AC problems. At Tijerina Elementary, thermometers inside classrooms registered temperatures as high as 91 degrees, creating an unbearable environment for students and staff.
In response to the situation, HISD released a statement acknowledging the AC issues across multiple campuses. They assured parents that efforts were underway to resolve the problems promptly for the safety and comfort of all students and staff.
Meanwhile, parents voiced concerns about the impact on their children’s education and well-being. One parent highlighted the difficulties faced by working parents who were unable to pick up their children due to the school closures.
As the community anxiously awaits the resolution of the AC repairs, students like Hooper Scholtz are hopeful for a return to a cooler learning environment. “It would be much easier to be in the classroom setting. Learn more, be easier,” he expressed.
With parents planning to seek answers from school officials and demand better communication, the pressure is on to ensure that students can soon return to comfortable and conducive learning spaces.
