Tragic Plane Crash in Odessa Claims Two Lives
On a fateful Tuesday morning, tragedy struck in Odessa as a plane crash claimed the lives of two individuals. The victims have been identified as 48-year-old Joseph Summa, the pilot, and 49-year-old Joleen Weatherly, the passenger. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed their identities following the crash.
Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis shared in a press conference that the incident occurred around 7 a.m. The aircraft, a 1991 Cessna Citation 550, was flying southbound at a low altitude over Yukon and Alderfer when it struck a power line. The plane then went on to crash into a private alley, hitting several homes and sheds along the way.
Upon receiving reports of the crash, Odessa Fire Rescue immediately dispatched multiple units to the scene. They found heavy smoke and flames engulfing several mobile homes and shop buildings in the 6800 block of Alderfer Ave.
Tragically, Joseph Summa and Joleen Weatherly lost their lives in the crash, and one additional person sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical care. The aftermath of the crash also caused significant damage to power lines and nearby businesses on Yukon, including Dewey Breakfast Shop.
As the community grapples with the repercussions of this devastating event, the American Red Cross has stepped in to provide assistance. They have set up a temporary evacuation shelter in response to the plane crash and are available at their chapter office in Odessa.
