During the Democratic National Convention’s delegate roll call, Kate Cox, a Texas woman who previously sued her home state for denying her abortion care, made a powerful announcement. She revealed that she was pregnant, emphasizing the importance of access to abortion.

Eva Longoria, a native Texan and actress, kicked off the roll call for Texas, introducing Cecile Richards, the former president of Planned Parenthood. Richards then passed the mic to Kate Cox, whom she hailed as a “Texas heroine.”

Kate Cox’s lawsuit against the State of Texas in 2023 brought attention to the challenges faced by women seeking abortion. Despite the Texas Supreme Court denying her request, Cox had already traveled out of state for the procedure due to medical reasons.

Her decision to seek an abortion came after doctors informed her that her unborn child had a rare genetic disorder and would not survive long after birth. Cox shared her emotional journey, highlighting the impact of restrictive abortion laws.

During her speech, Cox emphasized the lack of compassion in abortion bans and the detrimental consequences for women’s health and well-being. She stressed that her ability to access abortion care was essential for her reproductive health and future pregnancies.

Cox concluded her speech by announcing her current pregnancy, thanking the support she received for her decision. She expressed hope for the future and looked forward to the upcoming inauguration of Kamala Harris as President of the United States.
