When the school year started at Houston ISD, concerns over air conditioning issues arose. With nearly 250 campuses in the district, four schools reported AC problems in the first few days. Unfortunately, the problem persisted despite initial efforts to address it.
Law Elementary faced a chiller malfunction, prompting the transfer of students and staff to Woodson Elementary for their safety and comfort. Subsequently, additional schools experienced potential AC issues, prompting parental and educator concerns.
HISD acknowledged that older HVAC systems require frequent attention and maintenance. When issues persist, students and educators are relocated to ensure a comfortable learning environment. At Harvard Elementary, where AC outages were confirmed, makeshift cooling solutions like portable units were observed in use.
Parents, like Alma Alling, expressed worries about the impact of heat on student focus and performance. Despite temporary solutions like chillers, classrooms remained warm enough to necessitate student relocation. Alling emphasized the urgency for HISD to provide a lasting solution to the recurring AC problems.
As concerns mount, affected schools and parents eagerly await a resolution to the ongoing air conditioning challenges. The safety and well-being of students remain a top priority for HISD, highlighting the need for proactive maintenance and swift action in addressing HVAC issues.
