Join me as I share my experience of being part of history on July 20. Over 44,000 women gathered for a call hosted by Win With Black Women to support the Kamala Harris campaign. It was a truly extraordinary event.
At 12:46 p.m., President Joe Biden made a groundbreaking announcement – he would not be running in the upcoming presidential election. Just thirty minutes later, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. By 4:30 p.m., I was inundated with emails about a call happening that very night.
Initially planned for 1,000 women, the organizers quickly realized the immense excitement and had to lift the cap to accommodate all who wanted to join. It was a beautiful metaphor for the overflowing support.
The call was nothing short of magical. For over four hours, influential women like Johnetta Cole, Jenifer Lewis, Star Jones, and Maxine Waters shared their excitement and hope with a captivated audience. Many mayors, state representatives, and congresswomen were also present, reminding me of the powerful voice of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
I was struck by the selfless patriotism displayed by President Biden earlier that day. His willingness to cede power and pave the way for the next generation was truly inspiring. It made me reflect on our own community in Houston and the opportunity we have to empower and support the talented women ready to lead.
Power is not easily surrendered, but true patriots understand the importance of making room for others. It is time for us to come together and empower a new generation of female leaders.
