The Race for the 18th Congressional District: Who will be the Democratic nominee?
Excitement is building as we wait to find out who the Democratic nominee for the 18th Congressional District will be in the upcoming November general elections. This seat was previously held by the beloved late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
Over the weekend, seven candidates made their case to the precinct chairs and the public in a forum. Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has already garnered the endorsements of 30 precinct chairs. The competition is fierce and the stakes are high.
Once the Democratic nominee is chosen, they will face Republican nominee Lana Centoze in the Nov. 5 general election. It will be a pivotal moment in the political landscape of the district.
It’s important to note that this election is separate from the special election called by Gov. Greg Abbot to fill the remainder of Jackson Lee’s current term. This election will also take place on Nov. 5. Jackson Lee’s daughter, Erica Lee Carter, has thrown her hat in the ring for the special election, garnering support from various community leaders.
Sheila Jackson Lee was a force to be reckoned with, known affectionately by her constituents as simply, “Congresswoman.” Her recent passing after a battle with pancreatic cancer has left a void in the community she served for over 30 years. Her legacy includes significant legislative victories, such as establishing the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
As we eagerly anticipate the Democratic nominee for the 18th Congressional District, we honor the memory and contributions of the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
