The Recent District 18 Candidates Forum

The District 18 Candidates Forum on August 10 was an event designed to provide clarity to the district’s precinct chairs as they select the Democratic candidate for the seat previously held by the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

The forum, held at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy in Houston, was coordinated by the Southeast Democrats Network and the Black Women of Greater Houston PAC. Seven candidates were invited, including former Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, former City Council member Amanda Edwards, and State Representatives Jarvis Johnson and Christina Morales.

The event drew a diverse crowd of both longtime political figures and newcomers interested in the city’s political landscape. Educator Makeda Hawkins expressed the importance of candidates sharing their visions with the community.

The forum was moderated by DeLaun Dillard and Sonny Messiah Jiles, who asked candidates a range of questions, prompting engaging discussions and raising additional questions about their platforms and qualifications.

Issues on Voters’ Minds

District 18 residents highlighted various concerns, from education and infrastructure to reproductive rights and poverty. The lack of a single prevailing issue showcased the diverse needs of the community.

While the search for a strong leader resonated with many, the impending special election for the interim seat attracted attention. Erica Lee Carter, daughter of Jackson Lee, expressed interest in the seat to finish her mother’s term, emphasizing the importance of continuing her legacy.

Outlook on the Race

Dr. James Dixon announced his bid for the interim seat and pledged support for Lee Carter if she chooses to run. The upcoming special election and the full-term race are expected to bring more clarity on the frontrunners among the candidates.

The District 18 Candidates Forum sparked engaging discussions and highlighted the community’s diverse concerns, setting the stage for an exciting election season in Houston.
