Getting Ready for Back to School in HISD

As students in the Houston Independent School District (HISD), the largest school district in the state, gear up for the first day of school on Monday, parents like Brooke Longoria are ensuring everything is in place.

Longoria, a HISD parent, spent her Sunday preparing her kids for the new school year. “We’re just really excited to be back at school and see our friends and the teachers we love and just be back with our community,” she expressed.

While Longoria’s kids are eager for the return to Helms Elementary, she shares concerns about the district’s readiness. “My first concern would be the culture and history,” she stated. “I’m concerned about the number of principals and teachers who have left, just the turnover in general is unsettling.”

Longoria is also worried about campuses dealing with debris from recent weather events. She highlighted the community effort to clean up and expressed concerns about HISD’s response to storm debris.

Earlier this week, Superintendent Mike Miles assured that all 274 campuses will be ready for the first day of school. “There’s a handful of buildings that may not have the grass cut by that time, but we’re pretty confident that the overwhelming majority will,” said Miles.

Despite the assurances, Longoria remains cautious about the future of the district. “It’s been sad to see school communities lose beloved principals and longtime educators,” she shared.
