Voters gathered at the Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy to hear from candidates vying to be the Democratic nominee for the 18th Congressional District seat previously held by Sheila Jackson Lee.
The late Lee, who passed away last month from pancreatic cancer, was known for advocating for the underserved.
With 88 precinct chairs in the Democratic Party set to decide the nominee for the November ballot, voters were given the opportunity to provide input at the event.
President of Southeast Democrats Network, Melanie Miles, emphasized the importance of voters understanding the candidates’ platforms and making their voices heard.
Attendees listened to candidates address various issues such as the state takeover of HISD, overcrowding in the Harris County Jail, and their stance on term limits.
Feedback from voters like Dolores Rodgers highlighted the importance of experience and understanding the legislative process in a candidate.
Residents of the 18th district left the event feeling energized and engaged in the democratic process.
Ultimately, each voter made their own decision on who they hope will be selected as the nominee.
