The Platou Community Center recently took part in the prestigious Harris County Street Olympics, assembling a team of 12 talented young athletes led by the passionate Dajai Tennard.

Hosted annually at the NRG Center, the Harris County Street Olympics is a renowned event that reimagines traditional street games as Olympic-style competitions, fostering unity and athletic prowess among the youth of Houston.

Tennard, a committed community leader, highlighted the significance of the event for the participants. She believes that through their participation in the Harris County Street Olympics, young individuals acquire essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, respect, and resilience. These qualities not only help them excel in sports but also in their daily lives.

“Working with children is incredibly gratifying as it allows me to be a part of their growth and development, assisting them in overcoming challenges and discovering their potential,” said Tennard. “Witnessing their enthusiasm, resilience, and progress firsthand is truly fulfilling. It’s an honor to guide and support them, knowing that the skills and values we instill can have a lasting impact on their lives. The joy of building connections and witnessing their accomplishments fuels my passion and dedication to nurturing their growth and fostering their success.”

The Harris County Street Olympics offers a diverse array of activities, ranging from basketball and Hula Hoop challenges to spelling bees, jump rope, and jacks. Over time, it has expanded to include intellectual and physical challenges like chess, track, aquatics, and cycling, making it a holistic experience for all participants.

Previously, Madison Stewart, a frequent visitor of the Platou Community Center, secured 2nd place in the jump rope competition, showcasing the center’s strong presence in the event. This year, the team continued to shine, with teenage volunteer Amaya Cobbs clinching victory in the Football Accuracy Throw contest. Cobbs, who will be entering Fort Bend Marshall High School as a freshman in the fall, displayed remarkable skill and accuracy during the competition.

The advantages of participating in such events are numerous:

1. Teamwork and Cooperation: Children learn the importance of collaboration and effective communication in achieving common goals.

2. Discipline and Hard Work: Through training and practice, participants develop an understanding of dedication, perseverance, and a strong work ethic.

3. Respect and Sportsmanship: The event instills respect for coaches, opponents, and officials, promoting good sportsmanship and gracious acceptance of victories and defeats.

4. Resilience and Overcoming Failure: Children learn to navigate setbacks and bounce back from failures, enhancing their resilience and coping skills.

Registration begins on April 1 for parents interested in enrolling their kids in Houston Parks programs. The summer programs, which offer a variety of activities and include lunch, are priced at $30 per week, with free admission for children receiving Medicaid or food stamps. Additional details can be found at www.Houstonparks.org or by seeking assistance at local parks.

“If a parent is unemployed or qualifies based on income and has the necessary documentation, they can have the $30 weekly fee waived,” Tennard explained. “Each summer enrichment program has a limited capacity; at Platou Community Center, we can accommodate up to 25 individuals, and spots tend to fill up quickly. So, if you wish for your children to participate next summer, don’t delay.”
