Ticara King: Feeding the Souls of her Community
In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, personal chef and caterer Ticara Cali King is using her kitchen to provide meals for senior citizens in her tight-knit community in northeast Harris County.
Amid the glow of lights powered by a generator, King carefully prepares classic dishes like spaghetti, corn, smothered green beans, and cake for dessert. She considers herself fortunate to have a generator while many of her neighbors are left in the dark, which is why she took it upon herself to feed them during this trying time.
With her son Jaylend, King packs each to-go box by hand, ensuring heaping portions accompanied by bread and cake. She sees cooking as a way to show love and care for her community.
King, Jaylend, and a group of friends deliver these hot meals door-to-door, spreading positivity and warmth with each delivery. Many of King’s neighbors are older members of the community, and she believes that staying positive and offering simple gestures like a smile or a hug can make a difference in their day.
King’s generosity extends beyond her immediate neighborhood. She also provides meals to friends like Elliott Rolls and his family who were significantly impacted by Hurricane Beryl’s destruction. Despite the challenges, King remains committed to preparing three meals a day and hopes to inspire others to help in any way they can.
While the devastation of Mother Nature is evident, King believes that the power of kindness is even stronger. She emphasizes that people will always remember those who were there to help them in their worst times.
Through her efforts, King has already served more than 80 meals, nourishing not just bodies but also the souls of her community.
