Get Kids Fired Up About Politics With These Tips
It shouldn’t be a mystery – kids are excited about things they can relate to and see themselves in. To get the young people in our lives excited about politics, here are five immediate steps we can take:
1. Use Children’s Museum Model
Children love Houston’s Children’s Museum because they get to experience “grownfolk” stuff. We can apply this concept to politics and community service by introducing activities like Model UN, Model School Board, Model City Council, and Model State Legislature. Making it fun with food, music, and prizes will make it even more engaging for young people.
2. Tell the Origin Stories of Leader Legends
Black leaders, both political and otherwise, often started their journeys as young individuals. When youth learn about legendary figures like John Lewis, Diane Nash, and young heroes who made history, they feel inspired to make a difference too.
3. Identify Places Known for Empowering Young Folk
Support organizations and programs like SHAPE, SEHAH, and the Links youth programs that are already doing a great job of empowering and energizing Black youth. By supporting these initiatives, we can help young individuals realize their full potential.
4. Teach Them the Connection Between Votes and Everything
Show children the direct link between politics and the things they value. By getting involved in the political process, they can increase their chances of achieving the rewards they desire – whether it’s better schools, improved public services, or access to healthcare.
5. Be the Example
Children often mimic the behavior of adults around them. If we want young people to be passionate about politics, we have to lead by example. Getting excited about politics ourselves will inspire the next generation to do the same.
